The George Brown baseball program is pleased to announce the addition of catcher Josh Cipolla for the 2019 season.
The 6'2" catcher arrives via the top amateur program in Canada, the Ontario Blue Jays. He led the 18U team in batting average last season, and was named to both the high school All-American and Regional teams by Perfect Game USA. Cipolla, who has enrolled in the Building Renovation Technology Program, was also named an All-American Academic Top Prospect thanks to his 4.0 GPA.
"Not only an athlete, but more specifically a student-athlete, of Josh's caliber doesn't come around every year," said Manager of Athletics Melanie Gerin-Lajoie. "The focus and importance this young man places on his performance both on the diamond and in the classroom is something we strive for across our entire varsity program. He's a great fit for what we're trying to build at George Brown and I'm looking forward to seeing him hit the group running in September."
Cipolla leads an impressive group of incoming recruits to a program that looked much-improved in 2018 under the first year leadership of Wideman, sweeping Seneca to close the season and more often than not being extremely competitive against the OCAA's best. He figures to immediately slot in as one of Ontario's elite at the catcher position.
"Having Josh make the commitment to GBC is great. He is a fantastic student and comes from the best amateur baseball program in the country," said head coach AJ Wideman. "We are thrilled to welcome him aboard and look forward to everything he accomplishes on and off the field."
"Josh has a large frame with broad shoulders and strength throughout. He showed bat speed and strength at contact with the ability to split the gaps. He produces consistent hard contact when staying balanced at the plate," said Perfect Game USA. "He could become a dangerous power bat. Along with being a 4.0 student, Cipolla passes the eye test on the field and continues to add muscle to his frame."
Huskies baseball will host open tryouts in August 2019. Exact dates and times will be released later this month.
