Huskies volleyball is headed North on Saturday to pay the Canadore Panthers a visit in their first road action of 2019.
The women's team (5-7, 6th east) got the semester off to a quick start last weekend, posting a pair of impressive home wins over Algonquin and La Cite to extend their win streak to three. Second-year head coach Daphne Choi has the program playing its best volleyball in years, an aggressive, attacking style of play that has consistently put opponents on their heals.
Newcomers Beatriz Vilches and Ashley Lau, alongside returning outside hitter Tiana Samuel, have provided the Huskies with a trio of elite players at the net. The three are combining to average 8.7 points per set, each has over 90 points on the season and they have tallied over 600 total attacks as a unit. There is no doubt that they combine to form one of the most potent attacks in the east division.
The men's team (7-5, 6th east) came points away from winning their fifth straight last weekend, only to have La Cite come back for a 3-2 victory. The men have been extremely successful attacking as well, leading the OCAA in total attacks (1,424), ranking third in kills with 466 and fourth in total blocks with 118.
Outside hitter Vivek Mathimakki has turned into a star this season, ranking first in the province in kills (153), total points (193) and total attacks (418). With a deep supporting cast, including Perry Kumi, Yuseph Jackman and Nick Baker-Ball, Mathimakki has shown himself to be perhaps the best player in Ontario.
