A memorable turnaround season for George Brown's women's volleyball program was recognized at Friday's awards banquet hosted by Cambrian, as Tiana Samuel and Beatriz Vilches were named to the OCAA All-Star and All-Rookie team's respectively.
Samuel returned to the Huskies after a one-year hiatus, and had perhaps her strongest campaign with George Brown. The fourth-year outside hitter ranked among Ontario's elite in offensive categories across the board. Samuel finished up the 2018-19 season ranked ninth in the province in total attacks (451), fifteenth in kills per set (2.50), nineteenth in kills (145) and fiftieth in blocks (50).
Perhaps more important than her notable statistical contribution was the leadership role she played on such a young team. With eleven first or second-year players on the roster, the one-year turnaround was truly remarkable. The Huskies improved by six wins, and qualified for their first ever OCAA crossover game - Samuel was certainly among the most notable catalysts and a mentor off the court.
Beatriz Vilches was among the best freshman players in the province, as the 5'10" middle was a difference-maker from start to finish. A former Cuban national team player, Vilches had 117 kills (31st in Ontario), 2.21 kills per set (24th), and 24 blocks (14th). As good as she was on the attack, her defensive presence at the net may well have been the biggest difference-maker. Seemingly always in the right place, she was among the OCAA's elite at forcing opponents to adjust their attack due to her presence.
