The Huskies recreational programs made some noise in the first month of 2020. A couple of banners came back to George Brown, teams were recognized for their spirit and much more. Do not forget if you want to be a part of these teams, and learn more about upcoming events, follow GBC Rec on twitter (@gbc_rec) and Instagram (@gbcrecreation).
Campus Rec Day
It all started with the Campus Rec Activity Day at St James Athletic Centre and Casa Loma Athletic Centre. Numerous students dropped by to compete in football bowling, basketball and badminton events for prizes. They also had an opportunity to buy retro Husky gear on sale.
The extramural teams got off to a great start in the first week of competition. The Men’s Hockey team continued their dominance this season. They cruised to a championship victory at Seneca Newnham in stellar fashion. The squad is still perfect on the season winning all three tournaments they participated in.
George Brown hosted an extramural Women’s Basketball tournament and did the Huskies ever show up. After winning both of their round-robin games, they edged out Humber 40-32 in the semi-finals to earn a berth in the final. They did not look back afterwards taking down Seneca 39-21 for the banner. The men, on the other hand, were in Centennial but did not get the results they were looking for.
The Men’s Cricket team had an impressive showing at Fleming College. Both of their games came down to the wire, but they dropped a narrow 24-23 decision to Seneca and then a 43-42 contest to Fleming.
Co-ed Volleyball went 1-1 in round-robin play at Humber Lakeshore to earn a spot in the quarter-finals. The match against Humber North was excellent with both teams snatching a set, which meant the tiebreaker was needed to decide a winner. Unfortunately for George Brown, Humber North had a better point differential and advanced to the semi-finals. The tournament did recognize the energy and enthusiasm the Huskies brought rewarding them with the Fair Play Award beating out the other nine teams.
Do not forget about intramural 3-on-3 basketball at St James Athletic Centre every Friday night. Four teams are currently registered, but students are still able to participate. Get some exercise and fun in before the weekend from 3:30 pm until 5:30 pm.
