Beginning the year on a good note, the men's basketball team goes into the second half of the regular season with a 7 – 4 record.
At the Huskies Holiday Invitational, hosted on January 2-3, the men made it all the way to the semi-final before losing to the Ontario College Athletic Association East leaders La Cite in double overtime. Head coach Jonathan Smith was proud his team, pushing a nationally ranked team to extra frames. While eventually losing 99-91, Smith felt the game showed true resilience from his team, as they were able to stay neck and neck with one of the best teams in the country.
"Our game plan worked out for the most part. When we play them again, we know we were already able to take them into double overtime," Smith said confidently.
But, it took some time to get the Huskies rolling in their home tournament. In the first game against Sault College, the team was down in the first quarter, but after a strong second quarter, they clawed their way back to be tied at the half. With a final score of 73-66, Smith was pleased how they finished stating, "Sault is kind of a [persistent] team so it's good they were able to push us," also mentioning the game as a "quality win" for the Huskies.
Now moving onto the regular season, it will only get tougher for the Huskies.
"The season doesn't get easier," said Smith about the second half of the season. "It's a matter of getting everyone on the same page and realizing that the little things do matter."
Looking forward to the second half of the season, Smith wants to finish top two in the OCAA East to clinch a spot at provincials. "We are certainly in the mix," Smith said, "It's already an exciting year."
With eight games left in the regular season, the Huskies will play four more games this month with the chance at redemption and beat the undefeated La Cite on Jan. 30 at 6 p.m.
