For the second time in as many years, George Brown's men's indoor program was playing in the OCAA Championship gold medal game. Unfortunately for the Huskies, the result didn't match 2017's as they fell 1-0 to Humber in an incredibly tight matchup that could easily have gone the other way.
After controlling the ball and tempo for much of the first half, the Huskies were still deadlocked through 20 minutes thanks to some great goaltending from Humber. Midway through the second the Hawks broke the deadlock on a goal from Tournament MVP Bradley Fenton, and again George Brown pressured for the final ten minutes but was unable to score that one crucial goal.
"We had a few chances, they had one and they capitalized on theirs," said head coach John Williams. "Overall this week I thought our guys really came together and played as a team. We had a nice eight-man rotation and we could easily have won our second straight title today."
Jesse Oliver and Shaquille Agard were both spectacular throughout the day, earning Tournament All-Star team nods for their effort. Oliver was particularly impressive all week, as the Huskies leader showed why he has been a pillar of the program over the past five years. His leadership and ability were the catalyst for much of George Brown's success, and his shoes will certainly be big ones to fill.
"I'm already excited for next year, we just have to continue to push ourselves as hard as we can," said Williams. "The talent is going to be there, and we really feel as though we've become one of Ontario's best programs."
If the past four seasons are any indication, the program has already arrived as they have a gold, silver and two bronzes to show for their efforts at the Indoor Soccer Championship.
The Huskies rolled through round-robin play, outscoring opponents 10-5 while going 3-1-0.
In the semi-finals, the Huskies controlled play for the vast majority of 40 minutes but struggled to finish. 1-1 at the end of regulation, the game appeared headed to overtime before Omar Hussein's beautiful finished with seconds remaining sent the Huskies through to the championship.
