Rao joined the Huskies ahead of the 2026–27 season.
Bringing more than 45 years of coaching and teaching experience, Rao retired from full-time coaching in 2024 following a successful six-year tenure as head coach of the Brock Badgers women's basketball team. During his time at Brock, he compiled a 69-33 record, earned both U SPORTS and OUA Women's Basketball Coach of the Year honours, guided the Badgers to an OUA championship, and led the program to a U SPORTS national silver medal. In addition to his university coaching success, Rao served as a lead assistant coach with the Canadian Elite Basketball League's Guelph Nighthawks.
