Huskies volleyball setter hits ball

Grit, toughness, fight. That's what the Women's Volleyball team put on display last Sunday versus the visiting Algonquin Thunder in the second game of the Huskies home opener weekend.

Dropping the first two sets 16-25 and 21-25 to a perennially strong Thunder team, the Huskies dug deep and made a strong comeback push taking the next two 25-18 ad 25-14 to force a 5th and deciding set.

A back and forth 5th set saw several lead changes but the Huskies would come up just short in the final frame, losing the set 13-15. The effort the ladies showed was exactly what Head Coach Daphne Choi expects of her athletes.

"Approaching our weekend games we wanted to make sure that we showed a high level of effort throughout.  That meant from start to finish for both matches." Said Choi post-game. "It has been a huge part of the team culture that we've developed as a team, athletes and coaches together to never be "outplayed in effort."  I think we not only met that goal, but exceeded our own expectations."

In the prior day's game against La Cite, an efficient Huskies squad made quick work of the visiting Coyotes in a 3-set victory taking the game 25-18, 25-21, 25-15.

While the team couldn't pull of the weekend sweep, Choi says that they gained a valuable lesson in the loss on Sunday. "This weekend we forced our opponents to change their strategies, and pushed them to their limits. We're in awesome shape heading into our next game at Loyalist, and we're certain to get them [Algonquin] next time."

Next up, the volleyball teams travel to Belleville to take on the Loyalist Lancers on Sunday November 3rd at 1pm. Watch the action on OCAA Live through our LiveStream Page!
