The Huskies baseball program wrapped up their 2018 home schedule on Wednesday night with a doubleheader against Durham while also celebrating Seniors Night.
OCAA All-Star Anthony Buonaiuto opened game two with a bang, knocking a solo shot to right-centre to give the Huskies an early 1-0 advantage, and Johnny Lamanna was in a groove on the mound as he has been all year. The Lords managed to push a run across the plate in the second and fourth inning, but that was all the damage they could do and heading to the bottom of the sixth George Brown trailed 2-1.
That's when the home side went to work - after a leadoff double, Ryan Fata hit a liner to drive in a run and tie things up 2-2. With runners on first and second and just one out, Jake Benjamin smoked a liner. Unfortunately for the Huskies, Durham's first basemen snagged the shot and turned a double play to end the threat.
After neither team scored in the seventh, Durham managed to get a run across in the top of the eighth. Ty Doney lay a perfect bunt down to advance Huskies runners to second and third in the bottom of the inning, and Ryan Fata drove a ball deep to left field that almost found the gap but was caught on the run to score one; had it fell it would have ended the game. The Huskies again just couldn't manage to plate the tying run.
With Lamanna running low on fumes, the visitors would again take the lead in the top of the ninth, scoring five runs to go up 8-3. George Brown got one back in the bottom, but despite a great effort fell to the Lords.
Quentin Fleming got the game one start, and besides a few hiccups provided a solid six innings of work. The 6'4" Toronto native worked quickly, facing twenty batters while allowing six earned runs, with the Lords doing the majority of their damage in the bottom of the third inning.
The Huskies wound up falling by a final of 6-1, with the offense unable to find its groove.
Prior to the game George Brown recognized graduating seniors Hamza Patel, Dallas Pearce, Jake Benjamin, Jesse Dunn, Sebastian Garito, Nicolas Giancola, Michael Gauthier, Josh Bishop and Johnny Lamanna.
Next up the Huskies will visit Humber on Friday, October 5 for a doubleheader. Game one gets underway at 5:00pm.
