The George Brown Huskies announce that Women’s Basketball Head Coach Ian Morse is stepping down from his position. Morse has been instrumental in developing the program over the last two seasons and previously played a significant role as a lead assistant coach with the men’s basketball team for three seasons.
“The last five years at George Brown have been a wonderful learning experience. The first three on the men’s side, learning from Coach Jason Dawkins and Coach Marlon Greene, combined with medaling at provincials twice and at nationals once, followed by two years on the women’s side where we hopefully laid the groundwork for the program to build on for years to come. Overall, a great learning experience not just coaching-wise but personally as well,” Morse stated.
Morse took over the women’s basketball program in August 2024. After a season of growth, he engineered an impressive turnaround in his second year. It began in the summer with a strong recruiting class, including three U Sports transfers, that served as the catalyst for the team’s improvement, from a 3–11 record the previous season to a fourth-place finish in the East Division and hosting a playoff crossover game. The team’s offensive efficiency stood out, ranking among the top seven teams provincially in field goal, three-point, and free throw percentage.
As a lead assistant coach with the men’s basketball team prior, he played a key role in helping the program capture two OCAA silver medals and a CCAA silver medal, the program’s best results at Nationals since 1975.
"One of the key assets Ian brought to the table when we hired him was his mindset and approach to program development and taking the Huskies to a greater level of high performance, and he did just that. The turnaround the program has seen in two seasons has been tremendous, and we’re looking forward to his successor being able to continue to build on that foundation," said Manager of Athletics Melanie Gerin-Lajoie.
Throughout his time on the women’s side, Morse gained not only coaching skills but also valuable life lessons.
“These last two years have definitely been defined by growth, personally and professionally. I’m leaving with a much greater understanding of what it means to try to lead with empathy and understanding, as well as fostering a safe environment where athletes feel empowered to take risks knowing that failure is really just a learning opportunity,” he explained. “I also feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude to GB for giving me an opportunity to lead the women’s program, as well as to the athletes over the last two years for putting their trust in me and wanting to come and play at George Brown.”
The George Brown Huskies thank Ian for his outstanding commitment and dedication during his time with us and wish him success in his next chapter.
The search for the next Head Coach of the Women’s Basketball program will begin soon, stay tuned for the job posting announcement.
