The George Brown Huskies women's volleyball team fought back from down two sets but came up short, dropping a tight 3–2 (24-26, 15-25, 25-20, 25-18, 11-15) decision to the St. Lawrence Surge in their home opener on Saturday (Nov. 8) afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED: In the opening set, the Surge got off to a fast start and at one point led the Huskies 18-12. After head coach Daphne Choi called a timeout, the team bounced back, going on a 12-6 run led by their defence to tie the score at 24-24. However, two costly errors handed the set to the Surge. The visitors carried that momentum into the second set, taking it 25-15.
In the third set, the momentum started to shift. With the score tied 18-18, Jessica Bowmaster came up with a pair of clutch kills to spark a 7-2 run and take the set 25-20. Bowmaster, Alexa Millot, and Julia Gordon were catalysts on offence, helping the Huskies take the fourth set 25-18 and force a deciding fifth.
With the score 8-7 for the Surge, St. Lawrence went on a 4-0 run that proved too big of a deficit to overcome.
NOTABLE STATS: Kaarina Niemimaa did it all, tallying a team-high 14 points on 10 kills, three service aces, and a block, while posting a career-high 24 digs.
Bowmaster put together her best match early in her Huskies career, recording 11 points on nine kills and a block. Gordon and Elorie Stirling each chipped in 10 points, while libero Kaiylyn Mac-Fung posted a match-high 26 digs.
UP NEXT: The Huskies (0-3) complete a back-to-back at home when they face the Canadore Panthers (2-2) on Sunday (Nov. 9) afternoon. First serve is at 1pm.
