Coming off a successful opening weekend, Huskies basketball will look to carry the momentum into road visits to St. Lawrence on Friday and Loyalist on Saturday.
The men's team (2-0, 1st east) earned a pair of opening weekend wins by a combined 52 points, led by Alex Petronis scoring a combined 49. The Huskies ability to transition from a defensive rebound to fast break opportunity was a difference-maker in both games, and George Brown boasts an impressive group of athletic wings who can handle the ball and finish on the break. Adam Costanzo (15 points, 8 rebounds vs. La Cite), Jordan James and DJ James have all done major damage in the open court through two games.
The biggest question mark going into the year was at the point guard position, but the Huskies appear to have two starting-caliber players in Teshayn Gayle and Chris Fields. The duo combined for 25 points and seven assists in the season-opening win over La Cite, and did a seamless job of getting George Brown into their offense. In the frontcourt, Matt Bukovec and Justin Bhangoo look primed to provide a difficult to defend inside-outside look that is sure to open the floor up.
The women's team (1-0, 1st east) couldn't have gotten their year off to a better start, as they controlled play from the jump in a 16-point win over Algonquin. Second-year head coach Warren Williams has clearly emphasized the importance of full-court pressure this year, and it resulted in an impressive 42 forced turnovers on opening day.
The duo of Tianna Sullivan and Aprille Deus were difference-makers, with 2016-17 All-Star Sullivan pouring in a team-leading 15 points on Saturday afternoon along with seven boards while Deus controlled the pace of the game, scoring 14 points and netting a team-best seven helpers. Reigning All-Rookie team member Kiyann Grimaldo was solid in her season debut, chipping in with 10 points and four rebounds in the win.
The Huskies tip-off against St. Lawrence at 6pm and 8pm on Friday night, followed by Loyalist on Saturday at 1pm and 3pm. Follow @GBC_Huskies on twitter for updates throughout both games.
