The Huskies thumped Cambrian College of Sudbury, 89-66, in a game George Brown led at one time by 30 points. While George Brown heads in to the second half of the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association season with a 7-2 record, Cambrian is 0-9.
Earlier in the week, George Brown defeated Lambton College of Sarnia, 93-77, and also defeated Redeemer University College of Ancaster, 96-74.
With the win, George Brown will meet Durham College of Oshawa in the second half of a Saturday afternoon championship round semifinal at 3p.m. Fanshawe College of London will play Humber College of Toronto in the other game, at 1:30pm, to decide gold medal evening game finalists.
Balance the guys are playing well as a team, learning from each other and making things happen, said Huskies head coach Jonathan Smith. There's a buzz on this team that I like and when they're confident, play un-selfishly and do what is needed to get the job done they can be a dangerous team to play against.
George Brown used 14 players in the game and 12 scored points. Vadim Halimov, the country's top scorer, saw limited action and still led the Huskies in scoring with 16 points.
Givon Wint and Ricardo Brown each added 11. Four Cambrian players scored in double digits.
It was also the fourth consecutive game in which the Huskies have beaten Cambrian dating back to January 21, 2012, when the Northern Ontario school team won 65-53 at home.
George Brown led in almost every major statistical department with a 17-9 edge in free throws, and at the upper end of a 24-10 point total on turnovers. In rebounds, again George Brown with a 44-28 advantage.
In other opening days games, Mark Brown had a game-high 24 points for Georgian College but it wasn't enough for the Grizzlies. Fanshawe College, with 11 players scoring points for the Falcons and a 40-34 halftime lead, rallied to win, 84-76.
Humber College led from start to finish as the Hawks defeated St. Lawrence, 76-50. Ahead 25-13 after the opening quarter, 41-24 at halftime and 55-41 with one quarter left in the game, Humber was led in scoring by Matthew Marshall with 19 points. For St. Lawrence, its' top scorer was Terrance Thomas with 15 points that included a trio of three-point baskets. And Durham defeated Dawson 77-69 with Eric Smith scoring 25 points for the winners. - DG
