One thing Vadim Halimov didn't learn in math class was that 483 plus 72 equals a spot in the Ontario history books.
The talented shooting guard with the George Brown Huskies men's basketball team has four regular season games left in his Ontario Colleges Athletic Association career to reach a special milestone.
And while he knows it, Halimov is not bragging about it.
In fact, he's doing what comes naturally to him as a leader, gifted athlete and genuine person. Halimov is recognizing his teammates and coaching staff at George Brown for his fabulous season.
Already the top scorer in College basketball in Canada, a strong candidate for Player of the Year in the OCAA, Halimov - who left Seneca College after four years of studies to pursue something different at George Brown is hoping to end the month of February with a special achievement.
The 25-year old, who was born in Uzbekistan, needs 71 points to tie, and 72 to set the record, as the all-time career scoring leader in OCAA basketball history. Halimov compiled 1,279 points coming in to his fifth year of eligibility. He has scored 483 points in 16 league games.
Holding that honor now is former Durham College player Anthony Batchelor, who notched 1,833 during a five-year career ending in 2009.
Halimov and the Huskies meet the OCAA's East Division leaders from Algonquin College of Ottawa on Feb. 8 in the first game of a weekend home court doubleheader. On Feb. 9, La Cite of Ottawa
Against Algonquin, in George Brown's first game of the season, Halimov scored 27 points. The next day, also in Ottawa, when the Huskies played La Cite, Halimov scored 31.
To close out the season, George Brown will play at Seneca College on Valentine's Day and Feb. 18 at Georgian College in Barrie.
Halimov, with a fantastic season, has scored 30 or more points in 11 of his 16 league games. His highest, a 40-point game, was against Centennial College of Toronto. - DG
