Givon Luxmore-Wint is an admirer of
You may know of him as the poet, and cartoonist, known for his children's books written, and illustrated, as
And while it's not quite clear, or known, if Geisel actually is credited with a famous phrase, Luxmore-Wint thinks so and he has chosen to follow those words in his journey through life.
"Be who you are, say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind," recited Luxmore-Wint, studying Business and Finance at George Brown College. “Means a great deal to me now and in the future."
The 20-year old has student is also a member of the Huskies men's basketball team, plays both the point and shooting guard positions. To people who watch him play, he's un-selfish, likes to help others and insists on making an impact on what he does.
"You grow up learning things and it's important that you put the good ones to use in a positive way," said the Toronto born player, who went to Northern Secondary and played some football but excelled in the game of hoops.
Twice the recipient of Northern's Most Inspirational Player Award, he has plans of building on his accomplishments to achieve big plans.
"A financial advisor or accountant and walking down Bay Street (in Toronto) in a nice suit, confident and knowing what I'm doing," said the out-going Luxmore-Wint, who had a Grade Point Average of 3.14 and hasn't ruled out more post-secondary education at the university level.
For now, it's focusing on what has to get done in the classroom at George Brown.
And Luxmore-Wint, at 6-foot, 170 pounds, also has a mission on the basketball court and hasn't looked of place on the gym floor.
"I like playing basketball - gives me a chance to take a break from studies but also learn life skills," he said.
Luxmore-Wint credits many for helping him develop the fundamentals, but he has a soft heart for his former elementary school Principal, Julio Souza at St. Michael's Catholic, who chose him for a special event in the summer of 2006.
"It was a leadership event, something like 10 days in Kentucky and it was the first time out of Canada for me," he recalled. "I'll never forget him choosing me and how I learned so much about people, also becoming a leader."
Luxmore-Wint didn't play basketball last year focusing on his grades in his first year at George Brown. And, playing hoops, he's fully recovered from a fractured ankle which occurred in his grade 10 year when he landed awkwardly during basketball drills and training at the YMCA in the summer of 2009. - DG
