MURRAY LEADS THE WAY AS GEORGE BROWN WINS HOOPS CHALLENGE CUP

Terril Murray may have had some questions about his future after graduating from high school in Toronto.

That's because many teens aren't sure between continuing studies in university or college or taking a bit of time off to test the job market, make some money and then deal with the important decisions about career development and the future.

Looking back, the 21-year old Murray figures his two years of work after high school gave him a chance to work in construction, strengthen his skills and get a taste of a job market he didn't expect.

Murray took some advice of a friend and signed up for George Brown College's Heating

Talented on the basketball court, Murray wanted to play for the Huskies Varsity team – and did for one semester last year – but admitted he would be better off investing as much time as possible in academics.

But Murray didn't rule out playing for George Brown's Extramural basketball team and now, just one course away from his Diploma, has two basketball championship trophies to keep him smiling.

"I'm very happy," said Murray, a 6-foot-3 shooting guard. "I got to play basketball in a variety of tournaments, was on winning teams and did well in school."

Murray deserves more credit than he gives himself.

Top scorer in two of three playoff games, his 18 points helped George Brown defeat Seneca College, 56-44, to win the

"It's a great for a student to have a choice," said Murray. "My heart was set on the Varsity team, but I needed the extra time to make sure my school work was done. This is a very difficult academic program. "

For George Brown, it was back-to-back championships.

For Murray, who started last year with the Extramural team and then finished with the Varsity team, it meant two OCCCR titles.

George Brown also won four of the five OCCCR tournaments.

In the OCCCR, the schedule is reduced to five tournaments rather than a more detailed Varsity schedule in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association.

George Brown started off the OCCCR six-school event with a 51-32 win over the U of T's Mississauga team. Then, in what could be described as a semifinal, George Brown – with 17 points from Murray – defeated Sheridan College, 61-48.

In the championship win over Seneca, Sal Abdoulkader – who played for the Huskies in past – also had a superb game with 17 points.

The rest of the George Brown team was made up of Dwayne Harrison, Cayle Grey, Franklin Gyambi, Jermaine Bryan, Kahleel Walker, Chrstian Limiko, Kalsang Tashi, Osei Tawia, Ehsan Gulabyar and Shaquille Shephard.
