SQUAMISH, B.C. – Vadim Halimov's sensational year on the basketball court just got a whole lot better.
Winner of more than 10 prestigious awards in his graduating year at George Brown College, and likely a few more on the horizon, the 25-year old was selected as the top men's College basketball in Canada.
The prestigious award was presented at a banquet ceremony prior to the start of the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association men's basketball playoffs taking place at Quest University in this small picturesque community
For Halimov, he's now the King of the hardwood
"This is something to cherish the rest of my life," said an elated Halimov, who once trained to be a professional boxer. "I never thought in my life that I could score 30 or more points in so many games at the College level – and now get this award.
"There are so many people who deserve my thanks for helping me get to this stage – my coaches and teammates. One day, when I have children, I will be able to share this award and the story of so many wonderful and caring people who helped me."
Halimov led the CCAA in scoring for most of the year finishing with an average of 31.20 points a game. For the record, he was sixth in Canada in rebounds with 211. In Ontario, de was the marquee player from the start of the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association season and picked as "Player of the Year".
"It's great to see the country has recognized his success," said George Brown head coach Jonathan Smith. "While people know of him as a great player, he's exceptionally gifted, an academic and always caring about his teammates – traits you don't always get from one player."
Born in Uzbekistan, Halimov learned the game of basketball in Canada as a hobby while a high school teenager looking to keep active after an emphasis on academic excellence. His domination of the game was seen not just as a shooting guard, but rebounding, defensive work and team leadership.
In Ontario, he made history this year smashing previous records in career scoring, season scoring and free throws. His star status put him at the top of the Huskies all-time list of players.
"Vadim has been a big role model for many student athletes and he has done wonders for our program," said Ed Mark, George Brown's Manager of Athletic and Recreation. "He is not only a great player but once you get to know him - a genuine person and very deserving of the award." - DG
