Brazil is famous for many things including its carnivals, beaches and tropical rain forests.

And it's known for volleyball supremacy, too.

In July, Brazil is coming to Toronto – and George Brown College will be the home of both the Men's and Women's National Volleyball teams training for the Pan Am Games taking place from July 10 to 26 and the Parapan American Games set for August 7 to 15.

"This is wonderful news for the George Brown College community to host such great teams and for our students to get an opportunity to watch and learn from many of the best volleyball athletes in the world," said Ed Mark, Manager of Athletics and Recreation at George Brown.

Marcus Vinicius Freire, Olympic Committee of Brazil Sports Executive Officer, said George Brown College is a perfect fit for the country's volleyball teams.

"The Pan-American Games in Toronto are of great importance for team Brazil, as a key step before the Home Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, " said Freire.

"The Olympic Committee of Brazil is very satisfied with the partnership established with George Brown College, as Volleyball is one of Brazil's flagship sport, and the infrastructure at St. James Campus will provide a state of the art service for the teams, coming to Canada aiming for gold. "

On the global watch, Brazil's men's teams have won three of the past four World championships as well as a silver medal at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, England. The Brazilian women won gold at the last Olympics and a World bronze medal last year along with silver in the previous two competitions.

Brazil's Beach Volleyball teams have also been dominant with the men and women claiming silver and bronze respectively.

At the 2011 Pan Am Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, it was Brazil that placed third overall in medals with 141 and first in the Parapan Games with 197 medals. - DG
