Toronto Police were at George Brown's St. James Campus – but it was for a friendly basketball game.
Constable Tyler McGarrity from 42 Division was there and same for Constable Curtis Cellestine from 55 Division. Also, Marc Madramootoo – a former George Brown student.
Didn't matter how many Police showed up, it was the George Brown Huskies who ended up in charge with a decisive 91-64 win in the annual get-together between both teams – and the Huskies have prevailed the past few years.
George Brown had quarter leads of 33-15, 53-30 at halftime and 76-47 with one quarter left in the game.
"It's a fantastic opportunity for us to play George Brown," said Madramootoo. "We're competitive and (George Brown) want to win, too. But it's more than a basketball, game, it's building relationships and seeing that, although we're in law enforcement, we have something in common – hoops."
George Brown rookie Kasey Morris put on a show with a 23-point game clicking on 10 of 15 shots with seven two-point buckets and three-for-five from the three-point line.
"I was excited about this win – especially after a not so great showing against Fairmont State (exhibition game)," said the 6-foot-3 guard and grad of Eastern Commerce Collegiate in Toronto.
But Morris said he gained more confidence in his play and appreciated the rapport with the police.
"I come from the Jane and Finch neighbourhood and I've heard people say things about the police," he added. "I think the police, and the players who came play us, care about us - and it showed, too. Like any team, they played hard, were physical and wanted to win, but it helped me gain more confidence in how I played the game."
Kevon Mascoe and Andrew Thompson each added 14 points for George Brown while Akai Nettey scored a dozen. Twelve Huskies scored points in the game.
"There was hustle, but we missed lots of loose balls and the rebounding wasn't bad," said George Brown coach Jonathan Smith, whose team won its first pre-season game after losing a pair to NCAA schools. "Our rookies were impressive and Morris had a great game." - DG
