Marv Snowden is breathing a bit easier knowing that Vadim Halimov has played his last regular season game in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association.
That's because Snowden, a student at George Brown back in the 70s set four OCAA records in the 1973/4 season and, also that season, was on the first of what would be three consecutive provincial hoops championships.
What is not clear is whether Snowden, now believed to be living in the Pittsburgh area, was chosen OCAA Player of the Year?
Halimov, wrapped up five years of College eligibility, with some impressive numbers. Some would say it has been against tougher competition while critics would argue Snowden set his mark without the three-point basket.
But this is about Halimov.
In the 2013/14 season, Halimov set three OCAA individual records, including one that Snowden formerly owned for some 40 years. As the top College scorer in Canada most of the season, Halimov should get serious consideration for Player of the Year accolades in the OCAA.
For Halimov, shortly after his Valentine's Day evening record-setting masterpiece, he re-iterated two goals left to conquer:
The other: to experience the same feeling that Snowden had after winning a league championship and gold medal.
He got the free points record clicking on 7-of-10, including the record bucket with 55.2 seconds left in the second quarter of what turned out to be a 99-94 overtime loss to Georgian a team needing to win to make the playoffs. George Brown had already earned a first round bye.
By comparison, Snowden holds the OCAA records for most two-point field goals in a game (41), most two-point field goals in a season (264) and the most points in a game (86).
Halimov has the OCAA records for all-time career scoring points (1,902), points in a season (624) and now free throw points in a season (161). - DG
