He is eager to learn, advance his knowledge, pursue a career and, oh yes, he can play basketball very well.
Talking about Vadim Halimov, who not only has one of the top Grade Point Averages in the province, but is well aware that the spotlight has been on him these past few months. We're talking hoops and it's even brighter right now.
A shooting guard, and in his final year of player eligibility in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association, Halimov is closing in on a special achievement: the OCAA's individual all-time career scoring mark.
With five league games to go, the native of
Halimov, a strong candidate for the OCAA's Player of the Year, is now looking at the leader: Anthony Batchelor, who played for Durham College of Oshawa from 2004 to 2009, and tallied 1,833.
If things go his way, Halimov who had four seasons with Seneca before transferring to George Brown needs 101 points for the record. He's been averaging 30 points-a-game and leads all College scorers in Canada.
In 10 of 14 OCAA league games this season, Halimov has scored 30 or more points. His highest was against Centennial, 40 points in a 92-74 win over Centennial College of Toronto on Jan. 22, 2014. His lowest was 18 points in a 60-55 victory over St. Lawrence College of Kingston back on Nov. 23, 2013.
While some critics point to Halimov piling up the points over a five year College career, he like Batchelor and Wilson - is entitled to those years of eligibility and the career title is certainly one of the OCAA's prestigious awards.
One number that may not be in reac h for Halimov is the one held by former George Brown player Marv Snowden who scored 87 points in a league game during the 1973/74 season. The following season, the Huskies entered the record book for another reason: 187 points scored in one game.
George Brown has remaining league games on Jan. 31 at home hosting Fleming College of Peterborough, home on Feb. 8 in a game with league leader Algonquin College of Ottawa, home again on Feb. 9 with La Cite, also from Ottawa, away at Seneca College in Toronto on Valentine's Day and home on Feb. 18 playing Georgian College of Barrie. - DG
